We need a productive conversation

TO THE EDITOR:

Last week, we saw, once again, how much the conversation on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is broken on the UNC-CH campus.

Events hosted and letters to the editor written by Students for Justice in Palestine who sponsored Israel Apartheid Week and Heels for Israel who countered it focused primarily on pointing fingers and placing blame for the conflict on the other party, instead of presenting real, practical ways to end it.

We understand the desire to place blame from experiencing the narratives of both peoples ourselves.

In Ramallah, Palestinians showed the world the damages of the occupation buildings falling apart in refugee camps, people scarred by army raids and violence by Jewish settlers.

And in West Jerusalem, Israelis showed the world the damages of the occupation through physical and mental scars from Palestinian terrorist attacks and exhaustion from years of conflict and fear of their neighbors.

This is the status quo, and the status quo is unacceptable.

We know the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory is incompatible with Palestinian self-determination, Israeli security and American interests.

It destroys the lives and futures of Israelis and Palestinians alike.

And, like us, we know that those involved in Heels for Israel and SJP feel that something has to change and soon.

Israel in backlash on settlement goods

Israel in backlash on settlement goods By Pierre Klochendler

MISHOR ADUMIM INDUSTRIAL ZONE, Occupied West Bank – The longstanding Israeli practice of labeling settlement products “Made in Israel” is leading to mounting opposition to the occupation. Settlements are considered a violation of international law. In Israel, they aren’t. And so, more often than not, consumers of Israeli products across the world do not know whether they’re purchasing a product made in Israel proper or in a settlement.

This blurring of borders and labels by Israeli businesses trading on land which the Palestinians envision as part of their future state, and the ensuing calls for boycott, have entrapped a Hollywood

star in the nitty-gritty of the conflict, and in a conflict of interest.

Till recently, Scarlett Johansson doubled as charity ambassador for the British NGO Oxfam and as brand ambassador for SodaStream, an Israeli soda maker company listed on NASDAQ whose main manufacturing plant is established on an old munitions factory near the settlement Ma’aleh Adumim.

Her praise of the soda makers, carbonators, eco-friendly bottles and syrup flavours went viral even before the commercial was aired during the Super Bowl. Oxfam, which opposes trade with settlements, pressed her to recant her support for SodaStream, but she instead resigned from Oxfam. More …

Two Prisoners from Gaza Strip, Released

Two Prisoners from Gaza Strip, Released

GAZA, (PIC)– Israeli forces released Sunday two prisoners from Gaza strip after serving eight years behind Israeli bars.

Maher Akkad and Ahmed Laham, from Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, were released at Eriz crossing near Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip where their families and friends were waiting for them.

The two prisoners were arrested in 2005 for resisting the occupation where they were sentenced to eight years.

Meanwhile, the occupation authorities have released Sunday Fayez Mahmoud Abdel Jadallah Halaiqa, 33, from al-Khalil.

Halaiqa was detained in August 2005 for being affiliated with Hamas’s military-wing, the Qassam Brigades. He was released from Negev prison after spending eight years in custody.

Show #471 is the complete talk on 2/6/13 by Omar Barghouti at Yale University. Barghouti leads the Palestinian civil society effort for Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions of Israel for its many violations of Palestinian human rights. BDS demands an end to the occupation, an end to the discrimination and recognition of the Palestinian right to return. A group of Brooklyn politicians have tried to force cancellation of Barghouti's talk at Brooklyn College, but the college president Karen Gould stood firm for academic freedom.
