Wilds Cooke gets seven-game ban

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA Minnesota Wild left wing Matt Cooke has been suspended for seven games by the NHL for a knee-to-knee hit that injured Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie.

Cooke was at the league office in New York on Wednesday for a hearing about the incident, and his punishment was announced about eight hours later.

The Avalanche lead 2-1 with Game 4 set for Thursday night, so Cooke will be out for the series and more. He played a key part in Game 3 for the Wild in quieting Avalanche stars Nathan MacKinnon, Paul Stastny and Gabe Landeskog. Cooke was given a minor penalty for clipping Barrie, who will need four to six weeks to recover from a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee.

Israelis stop Palestinian official’s convoy following reckless driving

TURMUSAYYA, West Bank, Jan. 14 (UPI) — Israeli forces said they stopped Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah’s convoy at a checkpoint near the town of Turmusayya in the West Bank.

Hamdallah told Ma’an, the Palestinian news agency, a group of soldiers and settlers stopped his car and tried to force him to step out.

He claimed that soldiers and settlers planned to assault him.

Israeli forces said Hamdallah’s convoy was driving recklessly on the highway and was endangering traffic.

Army officials argued that members of the convoy assaulted an officer and refused to cooperate with him, Israeli broadcaster Arutz Sheva reported.

Hamdallah is also accused of swearing at one of the officers and calling him a dog.

No one was injured in the incident, Arutz Sheva said.

Israeli troops kill wanted Palestinian in West Bank

Israeli soldiers on Tuesday killed a Palestinian militant, who allegedly helped plan a bomb attack on a Tel Aviv bus in 2012, witnesses said.

Israeli forces exchanged gunfire with Mohammed Asi, 25, in a village near the West Bank city of Ramallah after attempting to arrest him.

Asi then took cover in a cave outside the village. Israeli force launched an anti-tank missile or shell into the cave, destroying it and killing him, witnesses said.

Local Palestinians said he was a member of the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad movement.

An Israeli military spokeswoman in Tel Aviv said they were checking the details of the incident.

Palestinian official: Israeli arrest raid in West Bank leaves 1 Palestinian dead

JENIN, West Bank A Palestinian security official says a Palestinian man was killed during an Israeli arrest raid in the West Bank.

The official, Khaled Abdel Aziz, says the man, Islam Tubasi, died of wounds sustained in the shootout with Israeli soldiers early Tuesday. Another 3 Palestinians were wounded.

The Israeli military says troops returned fire after Palestinians threw fire bombs and shot at them as they were trying to apprehend a suspect. The wanted man was shot while trying to flee the scene and died at a hospital later.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner says there will be a review of the incident.

Last month, two Palestinians were killed in clashes during an arrest raid in Jenin.

Palestinian kills Israeli in West Bank – Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, Sports

JERUSALEM (AP) – Israeli police say a Palestinian killed an Israeli in the West Bank and was later shot and detained by officers.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says that a “Palestinian terrorist attacked an Israeli civilian at a bus stop” at the Tapuah junction in the northern West Bank.

He says the Palestinian either stabbed or shot the Israeli man who died of his wounds at the scene Tuesday morning.

Rosenfeld says the Palestinian then shot at border police nearby who returned fire, wounding him. Officers detained the man and are investigating the incident.

The West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war from Jordan and claimed by Palestinians as part of their future state, has experienced a rise in violence lately but attacks like this one are rare.

HEBRON, West Bank, March 13 (UPI) — A Palestinian man was killed by Israeli soldiers who entered the al-Fawar camp south of Hebron in pursuit of people who threw Molotov cocktails, officials said.

Mahmoud Titi, 25, was declared dead at a local hospital shortly after being shot, Ynetnews.com said. Two other Palestinians were injured.

The incident occurred late Tuesday after soldiers chased suspects thought to have thrown Molotov cocktails and stones at Israeli vehicles on a highway. Palestinians threw stones at the soldiers and clashes erupted, the website said. The soldiers said they opened fire after feeling threatened.

A statement by the Israeli army said, “During the disturbance, a part of the force found itself in a situation in which soldiers felt their lives to be in danger and opened fire on the attackers,” The Jerusalem Post said.

The army is investigating the incident.

West Bank students attack British diplomat's car – Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, Sports

By MAJDI MOHAMMED Associated Press

BIRZEIT, West Bank (AP) – Dozens of Palestinian students blocked the car of a British diplomat, some even jumping on the hood, to prevent his speech at a West Bank university.

The consul general, Sir Vincent Fean, was to speak at the Palestinian university of Birzeit on Tuesday but following the incident, the speech was cancelled.

As the diplomat arrived in the town of Birzeit and stepped out of the vehicle, several students swarmed around him, blocking his passage. Palestinian security guards pushed him back into the car, which then left. Fean appeared unharmed.

The British consulate in Jerusalem was not immediately available for comment.

Activist Saed Qasrawi says the Palestinian students had intended to organize a peaceful protest against British policy toward Palestinians, but their rally quickly turned into the incident with the diplomat.
