If you listen to liberal or conservative commentators exclusively, you may think theres only one correct point of view, and the other end of the political spectrum is populated by wackos, evil schemers, and fools. Its comfortable to think that truth resides exclusively on your side of the dividebut lets try a mental experiment. Lets assume that most people, whatever their politics, sincerely believe in their ideals, and that those ideals arent all misguided. Lets look across the chasm and try to see what those other people are thinking.
[Note: Not all liberals and conservatives would agree with every tenet listed herebut these are the beliefs that generally define the two groups.]
On the social safety net
The liberal view
There are people in this world who need help. They struggle to put food on the table, or cant afford medical careand many of them live in the United States. A civilized society would try to help them, instead of leaving them to fend for themselves. (Someday, the one who needs a helping hand may be you, or someone you love. All it takes is a serious illness, an injury, a lay-off, or a death in the family.)
The conservative view
People are responsible for themselvesand, given the chance, theyre capable of supporting themselves and their families. If the government makes a practice of providing for people (with welfare, for example), they become weak and dependent, and lose their will to work. Nothing could be more destructive to the health of our society.
On wealth, taxes, and the role of government
Conservative Hamas government of Gaza appoints its first spokeswoman
The Hamas government of the Gaza Strip has for the first time appointed a woman to represent it to the world. The hiring of Isra Almodallal as a spokeswoman for the territory’s conservative Islamist rulers is part of a long-running push by the group, which has at times sought to curb women’s freedoms, to present a newer friendlier face both to its own citizens and internationally.Almodallal, a 23-year-old who speaks fluent British-accented English, has assumed a post normally held by tough-talking men who voice Hamas’ bitter opposition to Israel. She will be responsible for the Gaza government’s communications with the international media.”We are looking forward to having a different and unique language,” said Almodallal in an interview in her Gaza City office, on her first week in the job. “We will make the issues more human.”The change in policy began six months ago when a new head of the government media department, Ihab Ghussein, took over. He hired younger media people, started a n…

SEOUL – The first gay marriage in Korea on Saturday sharply divided the country, putting to the test its legal system and public tolerance of sexual minorities.
Film director Kim-Jho Gwang-soo and film distributor Kim Seung-hwan held a symbolic wedding in central Seoul. They have been partners for nine years.
The two men made their vows in front of guests reported to number about 1,000, including Kim-Jho’s mother, movie director Byun Young-joo and civil activist Paik Ki-wan.
Their marriage, however, will not be formally recognised here, as Korea has not legalized same-sex marriage.
But Kim-Jho, 48, an openly gay activist, and his 29-year-old partner announced that they are now a married couple regardless of the law.
“It is important whether or not we become a legally bound couple. But more importantly, we want to let people know that gays can marry too in our society,” Kim-Jho told reporters before the ceremony.
The newlyweds will seek legal approval for their marriage. They said they would consider filing a petition with the Constitutional Court if the government refuses to legally recognise their marriage.

Despite the resumption of peace talks with the Palestinians, Israel has added a number of outlying West Bank settlements to a list of communities entitled to special government funding.
Ninety settlements were included on the new national priority areas map approved by the government yesterday, entitling the communities to government grants, infrastructure investment, tax breaks and other benefits.
Four dovish ministers abstained in the vote, including environment minister Amir Peretz, who criticised the decision because it contradicts this period of efforts to advance peace.
Among the new settlements eligible for special financial assistance are the isolated communities of Rehalim, Bruchin and Sansana, considered illegal outposts until the government changed their status to fully fledged settlements.
Illegal settlements The international community considers all of the 121 West Bank Jewish settlements, home to 350,000 Israelis, illegal under international law.
The future of the settlements will be a core issue when Israeli and Palestinian negotiators resume peace talks in Israel next week. Israel wants to keep the majority of settlers by annexing the main settlement blocs to Israel and handing over parts of Israeli territory to the Palestinians in a land-swap deal.
The new map includes 600 towns and regions as priority areas. The original aim of the national priority list was to divert funds to poorer communities, particularly development towns on Israels periphery. However, the settler lobby has added West Bank Jewish communities to the list, citing national security criteria.
Justice minister Tzipi Livni, who heads Israels team at the peace talks, abstained in the cabinet vote, saying the national priority map was intended to advance the national interest, not political interests. Its inappropriate to take funds intended to tackle socioeconomic gaps and use them to support outlying settlements in dangerous areas, she said.
Zehava Galon, leader of left-wing opposition party Meretz, called on the Knessets legal adviser to investigate the government decision.

Important guests: Former secretary of state Henry Kissinger is believed to have attended the elite secret meeting
British taxpayers will have to foot the bill for the exceptional costs of policing of the clandestine Bilderberg meeting to be held in Watford next week.
The annual meeting of royalty, prime ministers and business chiefs – famous for being shrouded in secrecy – is taking place in Britain for the first time since 1998.
Given the amount of so far unnamed – prestigious people set to attend the event at the luxury Watford hotel in Hertfordshire, local police have been forced to step up security, which will be part-funded by the government.

No one told the looms at the Hirbawi Keffiyeh factory that business is slow in the West Bank.
Some are as old as the factory, bearing the inscription 1961. But they still churn out the fabric for traditional Palestinian head scarves, and at a deafening pace.
This is the only Palestinian factory that still produces keffiyehs, popularized by the late Yasser Arafat as a symbol of the Palestinian national struggle. All other keffiyehs sold in the West Bank these days are made in China, which many blame on the Palestinian Authoritys liberalization of trade policies over the past two decades.

This is a national product that should be protected by the government, not sabotaged by the government, says Abdulaziz Karaki, one of only two workers still employed by the Hirbawi family, which had as many as 15 employees in the 1990s.
After years of lobbying by small producers such as the Hirbawis, the Palestinian Authority (PA) last week announced that it had introduced new tariffs on imports that directly compete with Palestinian goods. Among them are not only textiles such as keffiyehs, but also shoes, leather goods, and furniture.
The move goes against nearly 20 years of market liberalization in the West Bank, which mirrored the Israeli trend of lowering barriers for international goods. It represents a revolutionary step by the PA to use the limited tools at its disposal to develop the West Bank economy, says economist Raja Khalidi of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
This is the first time that they decided to reverse and go in the opposite direction [from Israel] because of their own national development and industrial interests, says Dr. Khalidi, who attributes the move to increasingly intolerable pressures on the PA economy.
Indeed, the influx of imports has taken a serious toll on Palestinian manufacturing jobs.
