Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Group 3) 7f

Verdict

This has been a good race for Ballydoyle in recent years with five of the past 10 winners and they have three entered this time. Joseph is on board Bracelet and she looks the pick of the trio having scored on ground with some give over the course and distance. The Galileo filly Marvellous is out of a Cherry Hinton winner and looked a nice prospect at Navan in October. Avenue Gabriel made a successful debut in June and was then placed twice at Group level before landing a Listed race at the Curragh. She didn’t enjoy the fast ground in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket and today’s conditions should suit her better. BALANSIYA made her debut in an ordinary maiden here in November and turned it into a procession. She enjoyed the soft conditions and, though likely to be even better when the going dries out, she should be good enough. Harry’s Princess made her debut on Polytrack at Dundalk in November and was impressive enough though she’ll need much more here as will Remember You, though she could put her experience to good use in these conditions.

Bracelet (IRE) 1-2fav (9-0) Tracked leader in 3rd, 2nd from 2f out, soon challenged, led inside final furlong, pushed out to assert, comfortably, won at Leopardstown 7f 2yo fll mdn in Jun beating Tap Dancing (9-0) by 2l, 8 ran.

Balansiya (IRE) 11-4fav (9-0) Tracked leader in 2nd, headway to lead entering straight and soon stretched clear, in command final furlong and stayed on well, impressive, won at Leopardstown 7f 2yo fll mdn sft in Nov beating Upper Silesian (9-0) by 7l, 11 ran.

Avenue Gabriel 9-1 (8-12) Awkward and bumped start, tracked leader, led over 2f out, ridden when headed entering final furlong, faded, 5th of 8, 4 1/2l behind Chriselliam (8-12) at Newmarket 1m 2yo fll Grp 1 (1) gf in Sep.

Harry’s Princess (IRE) 5-1 (9-0) Tracked leader in 2nd, challenged early straight and ridden to lead well over 1f out, edged slightly left under pressure and drew clear inside final furlong, won at Dundalk 7f 2yo mdn fll pol in Nov beating Peony Fairy (9-0) by 4 1/2l, 13 ran.

Queen Of Power (IRE) 14-1 (9-0) Settled behind leaders, moderate 6th halfway, ridden 2f out, no impression in 5th over 1f out, ran on well final furlong, just denied, 2nd of 13, shd behind Wonderfully (9-0) at Fairyhouse 6f 2yo fll mdn gf in Jun.

Marvellous (IRE) 9-2 (9-0) Mid-division, pushed along 4f out, 8th 3f out, ridden in 4th 2f out, 2nd 1f out, stayed on strongly final furlong to lead close home, won at Navan 1m 2yo fll mdn in Oct beating I’m Yours (9-0) by 1/2l, 15 ran.

Remember You (IRE) 3-1 (8-12) Tracked leaders, ridden over 1f out, no impression until kept on final 100 yards, not reached leaders, 5th of 12, 1l behind Coral Mist (8-12) at Ayr 6f 2yo fll Grp 3 (1) gs in Sep.

Sparrow (IRE) 4-9fav (9-0) Always prominent and led before halfway, ridden to assert 1f out and kept on well inside final furlong, won at Curragh 6f 2yo fll mdn gd in Oct beating Bilderberg (9-0) by 2 3/4l, 16 ran.

Morning Star :: Ukraine: a very Western coup

Revolutions begin when capitalist contradictions become grave enough to unleash an explosion of public anger – but not all mass movements are progressive, warns Tomasz Pierscionek Small protests, triggered by seemingly trivial or unrelated events, may rapidly gather pace to become mass movements. The course they follow depends on pressures from within as well as from external factors, such as antagonistic forces and social-economic conditions

MLS Features: Top MLS stories of 2013

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – A lot can happen over the course of a year. At this time in 2012, the Los Angeles Galaxy had just claimed their second straight MLS Cup title and David Beckham called time on a successful five-and- a-half-year stint in the United States to join French side PSG. The end of the Beckham era raised plenty of questions as to how MLS would cope without one of the most recognizable faces on the planet.

Exposure || The Holy Land of the West Bank's hilltop youth

The Hilltop Youth in northern West Bank. Photo by Kobi Wolf

“Of course I will build my home here, even with the knowledge that I could lose all my money and that it could be that one day it will be demolished. I am building my house in the sovereign territory of the State of Israel, the Holy Land, and I do so for the sake of the country.”

This is the quote of a member of the hilltop youth in the northern West Bankor as they prefer to be call themselves, the youth of the Land of Israel an ideological right-wing group adamant on settling the territory.

Over the past two years, I have joined groups of hilltop youthidentifying myself to them as a member of the political left and also expressing my views – over the course of construction of illegal outposts facing Palestinian villages under the gaze of the Israel Defense Forces.

The army’s response varies: Sometimes it looks the other way and sometimes carries out other times it demolishes the outposts in accordance with a government decision.

My personal challenge as a photographer was to work with these youth while being open about my views.

My goal was to try to decipher what motives young males and females from the age of 16 and up to devote themselves to ideology and the sanctification of the land.

Israel air strike kills Salafist leader

An Israeli air strike on Saturday on the Gaza Strip killed a key Salafist leader there and one other activist, Palestinian security sources said.

Jordanian national Sheikh Hisham al-Saedini, 43, of the Mujahedeen Shura Council was killed in the attack in the northern town of Jabaliya, the sources said.

A 12-year-old boy, a bystander, was also wounded, Palestinian medical officials said.

The attack was one of several on the coastal strip over the course of the day.

An Israeli military spokesman said the attack targeted members of the Mujahedeen Shura Council, a Salafist group, who were ‘responsible for terrorist activities’.

Following the fatal strike, the air force also hit a training camp in Gaza City of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the strip, Palestinian sources said.

No casualties were reported from that attack.

Earlier on Saturday, the air force hit three targets in Gaza hours after a rocket fired from the territory exploded near a house in southern Israel, sources on both sides said.

‘Aircraft targeted a terror activity site in the northern Gaza Strip, and two terror activity sites in the central Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed,’ a statement from the Israeli military said.

‘The sites were targeted in response to the rocket fire towards southern Israel.’

Oakland police still handling fallout over treatment of Occupy movement

(Reuters) – One year after anti-Wall Street protests began rocking the streets of Oakland, police said on Friday they had fired or suspended 17 officers after the demonstrations led to a record number of complaints against the department. The Oakland Police Department came under intense scrutiny for its handling of the Occupy Oakland protests, with a federal judge in May calling for officials to deal with the backlog of complaints over police abuse or face sanctions

One dead in Israel Gaza Strip air strike

An Israeli air strike has killed one Palestinian and wounded two others, including a child, in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical sources said.

The attack on Saturday, one of several on the coastal strip over the course of the day, targeted an unidentified man driving a motorcycle in the northern town of Jabaliya, they said.

The Israeli army confirmed an attack, but gave no details.

Following the fatal strike, the air force also hit a training camp in Gaza City of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the strip, Palestinian sources said.

No casualties were reported.

‘The sites were targeted in response to the rocket fire towards southern Israel.’

Palestinian security officials said there were no casualties from the strikes, one of which hit an unmanned training camp of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the ruling Hamas movement, south of Gaza City.

They said the other two hit open ground near the Nusseirat and Al-Bureij refugee camps in central Gaza, possibly used as rocket launch sites.
