From Act II of Song at Midnight (film, 1937) .asianimperialisms.com Song Danping, the hero-turned fiend (phantom of the opera) is (re) pictured away from the Tosca original (in which Tosca's lover, the revolutionist Cavaradossi (whew, how to remember how to spell)) and tweaked into a 1930s Chinese “left wing” opera: instead of falling to the firing squad, he turns his back to the guards and delivers a hard-not-to-giggle-at “speech” in song prematurely (in fact and fiction and fictionalized fiction) declaring “Rome” and papery dead and the LEF promises of Napoleon about to be realized. hen walks off the parapet with the guards asleep at their posts, If it's bad theatre and worse singing, there is at least a nice cameo of Hu Ping in her dad's box busy making eyes at the over-the-top dandy singer/actor.From:James PViews:0 0ratingsTime:02:10More inEducation
