Holy Father Recalls the Life of Peter Faber at a Mass in the Gesu, the Mother Church of the Jesuits Rome, January 03, 2014 (Zenit.org) | 463 hits The power of the Church does not lie within itself and its ability to organize, but it is hidden in the deep waters of God,” Pope Francis said at Mass this morning in the Mother Church of the Jesuits in Rome, the Church of the “Ges”. The Holy Father also said the Gospel cannot be proclaimed “with inquisitorial beatings of condemnation but must be preached gently, with fraternity and love”, with an open heart, “always longing ” for God, like that of Father Peter Faber

Matthew Murray, a disturbed young gunman behind the the shootings in Colorado Springs, chose to end his nightmare and rebel against Christian-right self-help gurus and cult-like doctrines.
The following is an excerpt from Max Blumenthal’s new book, Republican Gommorah: Inside the Movement That Shattered the Party, published by Nation Books.
Max Blumenthal is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in TheNew York Times, theLos Angeles…
A continuing conversation about Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel.
Its deploying all its resources to fight the growing world movement against the occupation.
A few miles down the road from Colorado Springs [a home to James Dobson's Focus on the Family], in the quiet bedroom community of Eldredge, a deeply disturbed young man named Matthew Murray followed the unfolding debacle at New Life Church [once under the stewardship of Pastor Ted Haggard] with an interest that bordered on obsession. Murray, a sallow-faced, bespectacled 24-year-old, had been indelibly scarred by a lifetime of psychological abuse at the hands of his charismatic Pentecostal parents. Murray’s mind became crowded with thoughts of death, destruction, and the killings he would soon carry out in the name of avenging what he called his “nightmare of Christianity.”
On an online chat room for former Pentecostals, Murray heaped contempt on his mother, Loretta, a physical therapist who homeschooled him to ensure that his contact with the outside world was severely limited. “My ‘mother,’” Murray wrote, “is just a brainswashed [sic] church agent cun,t [sic]. The only reason she had me was because she wanted a body/soul she could train into being the next Billy Graham…”
He went on:
…my mother was into all the charismatic “fanatical evangelical” insanity. Her and her church believed that Satan and demons were everywhere in everything. The rules were VERY strict all the time. We couldn’t have ANY christian or non-christian music at all except for a few charismatic worship CDs. There was physical abuse in my home. My mother although used psychotropic drugs because she somehow thought it would make it easier to control me (I’ve never been diagnosed with any mental illness either). Pastors would always come and interrogate me over video games or TV watching or other things. There were NO FRIENDS outside the church and family and even then only family members who were in the church. You could not trust anyone at all because anyone might be a spy.
An authoritarian Christian-right self-help guru named Bill Gothard created the home-schooling regimen implemented by Murray’s parents. Like his ally James Dobson, Gothard first grew popular during the 1960s by marketing his program to worried evangelical parents as anti-hippie insurance for adolescent children. Based on the theocratic teachings of R. J. Rushdoony, who devised Christian schools and home-schooling as the foundation of his Dominionist empire, Gothard’s Basic Life Principles outlined an all-consuming environment that followers could embrace for the whole of their lives. According to Ron Henzel, a one-time Gothard follower who co-authored a devastating expos about his former guru called A Matter of Basic Principles, under the rules, “large homeschooling families abstain from television, midwives are more important than doctors, traditional dating is forbidden, unmarried adults are ‘under the authority of their parents’ and live with them, divorced people can’t remarry under any circumstance, and music has hardly changed at all since the late nineteenth century.”

BEIRUT Through decades of conflict, there has been one thing all Lebanese could agree on, their adoration of the country’s iconic singer Fairouz, who stood unquestioned above the fray with her anthems to Lebanon and Palestine and songs of love.
Now the 78-singer has been dragged into the thick of the country’s bitter political and sectarian divisions after her son said in an interview that she loves the leader of Hezbollah, sparking an uproar among opponents of the Shiite guerrilla group.
Angry critics on Twitter and Facebook and in Lebanese newspapers have sharply said Fairouz should stay out of politics, some even accusing her of treachery while supporters has indignantly replied that she is free to support whomever she chooses. Fairouz herself has remained silent: Throughout her career, she has never expressed her political opinions and she rarely gives interview.
The storm has brought warnings from politicans that Lebanon’s society itself is fraying an indication of just how prominent a national symbol Fairouz is.
“This surprising campaign is an indication that the country is heading toward destruction,” parliament speaker Nabih Berri, head of a Shiite party allied to Hezbollah, told the As-Safir newspaper.
The comments by Fairouz’s son touched off the increasing divisions in the country over Hezbollah. The Syrian- and Iranian-backed group gained prominence and support in Lebanon and around the Arab world for its fight against Israel.
But it has long had opponents in Lebanon, particularly among the Sunni community, because of its domination over the country’s politics and its state-within-a-state status, backed by its guerrillas, who are even more powerful than the military.
The criticism increased this year when the group sent fighters to back Syrian President Bashar Assad against rebels in that country’s bloody civil war. Since openly joining the war in May, battle-hardened Hezbollah fighters have helped Syrian government forces of capturing wide areas near the capital Damascus as well as the strategic town of Qusair near Lebanon. That has infuriated Sunnis in Lebanon and elsewhere in the region, who largely support the rebels.
In mid-December, Fairouz’s son Ziad Rahbani, a prominent composer and playwright who openly expresses his support for Hezbollah, told a news website linked to the group that his mother loves Hezbollah chief Sheik Hassan Nasrallah “a lot.”
He added that his mother will “will be angry with me as she did last time when I gave a TV interview and revealed some of her personal matters. She boycotted me.” Last year he told the Lebanon-based TV station Al-Mayadeen that his mother’s points of view in politics are “not far from mine.”
State Rep. Ed Sullivan Jr. of Mundelein who is chairman of the House Republican campaign organization, said his decision to back same-sex marriage represented a personal and family evolution on the issue. (WGN-TV)
State Rep. Ed Sullivan Jr. of Mundelein said Sunday he will support a bill to allow gay marriage in Illinois, becoming the second House Republican to do so and first among leadership.
Sullivan, who is chairman of the House Republican campaign organization, said his decision to back same-sex marriage represented a personal and family evolution on the issue. Previously an opponent of civil unions, Sullivan told the Tribune that his mother-in-law, who lives in the southwest suburbs, has been in a same-sex relationship.
“The first reaction from people might be, ‘Well he might be voting for that just because of his mother-in-law,’” Sullivan said. “The reality is, because my mother-in-law is gay, I have more of an understanding and familiarity with same-sex couples.”
A state representative since 2003, Sullivan and state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove are the only House Republicans to publicly announce their backing of the same-sex marriage bill, which already passed the state Senate. With House lawmakers returning to Springfield on Monday after a two-week break, supporters of the measure have said they were within a dozen votes of the 60 needed to pass it.
Sullivan said he believes more Republicans among the 47 in the House will sign on.
“There is tremendous momentum leading up to this vote. I think we’re very close,” he said. “There’s many of my colleagues that have talked about this, that have said it’s the right thing to do.”
Same-sex marriage has been controversial for Republicans in the state. Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady urged lawmakers to pass the bill, but some social conservatives unsuccessfully sought his ouster because his position conflicted with a plank in the state Republican platform opposing same-sex marriage.
Recently, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, a Brady supporter, announced his support for gay marriage, becoming the second U.S. Senate Republican to do so.
“This issue for me goes to the core of fairness marriage equality for all people. I think it is in line with what I believe, and I personally believe it is in line with what our party believes, and that’s trying to treat people with fairness,” Sullivan said.
