WJC2013: Team USA may lose Ottawa Senators pick Stefan Noesen to OHL suspension

Ottawa Senators first-rounder Stefan Noesen (OHL Images)

Chalk this up to the difference between leagues in scheduling and supplemental discipline, but that does not make it fair to Stefan Noesen and Team USA.

Earlier this week, Team Canada left wing Jonathan Huberdeau was suspended four games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for an incident where a linesman was injured. The suspension was academic since it covered a stretch where Huberdeau would be with Canada in preparation for the IIHF world U20 championship instead of the Saint John Sea Dogs. But Plymouth Whalers star Stefan Noesen might not get away scot-free. As Chris M. Peters of the awesome United States of Hockey blog uncovered, Noesen’s 10-game suspension from the Ontario League for a charging major/game misconduct last weekend imperils his availability to the Yanks for the world junior hockey championship.

Peters explains it better than I can:

Confirmed via source with direct knowledge of the situation, IIHF will honor OHL’s suspension, which would cost Noesen a shot at playing at the World Juniors. USA Hockey has appealed the decision.

… Even if the IIHF accounts for time served, the Whalers only have two games between now and the start of the tournament. Noesen already sat out Wednesday night’s game. Using that info, there will be seven games left on Noesen’s suspension which would mean he’d likely have to miss about four or five tournament games. If the IIHF decides to uphold the ruling, it likely dashes Noesen’s hopes. (United States of Hockey)

Peters pointed out the pertinent statute. Bylaw 302 states, “Player suspensions will apply to participation in both ice hockey and In-line hockey competitions irrespective of the competition in which the offence giving rise to the suspension occurred.”

The difference between Huberdeau and Noesen’s situations is that Saint John will have played four games (five, in fact) by the time the WJC begins on Dec. 26. The OHL is beginning its holiday break on Monday, so the Whalers only play three games before the tournament begins.

Understandably, USA Hockey is going to appeal to the IIHF; make your own joke about how the term ‘Branch justice’ translates to European hockey officials. Noesen, who was ejected from the game, appears to jump before checking the Oshawa Generals’ Tyler Hore on the play in question.

There is an avenue for USA Hockey to appeal. A half-educated guess is Noesen would join the team while it’s being heard and perhaps will get off the hook. However, Peters’ tone seems less than optimistic.

As the Dodgers hit paydirt, the Nationals-MASN talks remain in limbo

Another reminder of the escalating stakes and mind-boggling math associated with the Nationals' standoff with MASN over rights fees came this weekend. The Los Angeles Times reported that the Dodgers are in negotiations with Fox Sports that could result in a $6 billion, 25-year television contract. That would work out to Fox paying the Dodgers $240 million per season to broadcast their games or a …

Sterling’s Three-Point Night Triggers Wolves Victory

(Credit: Ross Dettman/Chicago Wolves)

ROSEMONT, ILL. Left wing Brett Sterling scored two goals and handed out one assist as the Chicago Wolves snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 win Tuesday night over the Milwaukee Admirals at Allstate Arena.

Right wing Andrew Gordon, defenseman Mark Matheson and center Jordan Schroeder added tallies for the Wolves (8-5-2-0) while Anton Rodin handed out a professional-best three assists.

It was a very strong effort by the entire team tonight, said Wolves head coach Scott Arniel. It was nice to see guys make some plays and get rewarded for their hard work.

Sterling set the tone by producing the games first goal at 7:14 of the first period. Defenseman Derek Joslin carried the puck into the zone and dropped it to Sterling, who fired from the top of the right circle for his fifth goal of the season.

Sterling followed that with a backhand pass to Gordon, who was slashing toward the net and knocked home his fifth goal of the season. His power-play tally made it 2-0 at 12:27 of the first.

Matheson pushed the margin to 3-0 just 62 seconds into the second period with a wrister from the left circle through heavy traffic. After Milwaukees Chris Mueller scored his first of two goals, Schroeder answered with a goal from the slot that required him to fall to his knees and elbows to complete his move.

The Admirals (6-8-1-0) cut the margin to 4-2 at 1:41 of the third, but Sterling rifled home his second goal of the night just 30 seconds later to give the Wolves some breathing room.

Goaltender Eddie Lack (7-3-0) stopped 23 shots for the win. Milwaukees Jeremy Smith (4-8-0) saved 25 of 29 shots in the opening 40 minutes before being replaced by Magnus Hellberg to start the third period.

The Wolves return to the ice Friday with a 6 p.m. visit to Grand Rapids. Chicago hosts Milwaukee at 7 p.m. Saturday in another Amtrak Rivalry battle. For tickets, call 1-800-THE-WOLVES or visit ChicagoWolves.com.

Gotta Have Faith – Marriage Equality Version – Video

Gotta Have Faith – Marriage Equality Version
In light of the President's recent support for gay marriage, the victories for marriage equality in this election and the forward momentum for marriage equality everywhere (albeit a little slower in some places), and our recent rediscovery of our love for this awesome song, we put together a little diddy on why marriage equality is important to us. Enjoy! well i guess it would be nice if i could get gay married i know not everybody believes that's true but you've gotta think twice before you take my rights away and i know all the games you play 'cause the 50's played them too oh but i need somebody to let me walk down the aisle with my boo and when that queer love comes out with pure devotion well it'll take a long fight, maybe, but we will get married too! you just gotta have faith baby i know you don't want me to stay say please, please, please just go away but this is our country too maybe you don't mean every word you say can't help but kinda love the gays because we all know you've thought about it too before this river becomes an ocean before you throw my rights back on the floor oh please reconsider this foolish notion that i need someone to tell me who i do my loving for you just gotta have faithFrom:hilary raginViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:58More inEntertainment

Dave Zirin

You may or may not remember the name Mahmoud Sarsak, subject of the most important and most underreported sports story of 2012. Sarsak is the Palestinian national team soccer player who was jailed for three years without charges by the Israeli government. He was denied contact with his family, a trial and kept largely in solitary confinement for reasons that bewilder his loved ones to this day. Finally Sarsak was freed after refusing food for ninety days, losing a third of his body weight, and through his personal agony, spurring international outrage. (Having 2,000 fellow hunger strikers certainly helped.) Organizations like Amnesty International, the 50,000-strong international union of soccer players, FIFpro and even Sepp Blatter, the morally sclerotic leader of FIFA, called for his release. Israel relented but that is clearly not the end of Sarsaks story.

Now Mahmoud Sarsak is in the news again after refusing an invitation sent by the legendary team FC Barcelona to attend its October Clasico match next week against Real Madrid. Sarsak will not make the trip because FC Barcelona wants him there to mute planned protests against the presence of another person invited to attend the match, former Israeli Defense Forces soldier Sergeant Major Gilad Shalit. Shalit is an Israeli folk hero after being a prisoner of war for five years in Lebanon, captured on June 25, 2006, on the cusp of Israels brutal 2006 bombing campaign, known in Lebanon as the July War. One of the many circulated petitions protesting the Shalit invite was specifically written and signed by Palestinian soccer players and endorsed by entire clubs. Their petition read:

We, Palestinian footballers, athletes and sporting organizations and officials, are dismayed to learn the great team of Barcelona will host Gilad Shalit to the Clasico, Barcelona vs. Real Madrid, on October 7th, while more than 5000 Palestinian political prisoners remain rotting, many in isolation, many with no visits, many on hunger strike with no attention or care for them to be released.Just as the effective boycott of sports teams from the South African apartheid regime showed, sporting and political life cannot be separated. We ask you to not show solidarity with the army that oppresses, imprisons and kills Palestinian sportsmen and women in Palestine.”

FC Barcelona had to respond to the torrent of criticism on its website, stating that contrary to reports it did not in fact invite Shalit itself but accepted a request from Israeli authorities to have Shalit watch a match during his visit to Barcelona. In the same press release, Barcelona announced its intent to unite Shalit and Sarsak as a symbol of efforts to bring peace and harmony to the Middle East.

But this is one game Sarsak wouldnt play. As Sarsak said of Sgt. Maj. Shalit, His slogan is the gun, whereas mine is football, whose message is love and peace. For this reason I will refuse.

Sarsak also made it clear he understood that the root of the invite wasnt a desire for peace and harmony but a response to protest. I know that the invitation was issued after heavy pressure on FC Barcelona so that it could get out of its dilemma, but the Palestinian people are not and will not be a means for [others] to get out of their dilemmas.

The courage of this decision is very real. Not only was Sarsak rejecting FC Barcelona but also his own Palestinian embassy officials who formally asked him to attend. He was making clear that peace and harmony with Sgt. Maj. Gilad Shalit in the current circumstances would do more harm than good, selling the idea that peace under the current circumstances of quarantine and occupation was a peace worth having. As Sarsak said, I cherish the invitation of a great club like Barcelona but not [as] an invitation for normalization.

Sarsak also stated that he didnt want anyone to interpret his rejection of the invite as a refusal to speak out politically about his time behind bars. It is a great honor and it is a victory for a Palestinian prisoner and for the Palestinian cause and a victory for our principles and stances that a prisoner who is at the same time an athlete should go out and explain the suffering of his people, he said. But in the presence of the soldier Gilad Shalit on the same stands, I will refuse this invitation.
