Go here to read the rest:
E.W. Jackson, the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, on Sunday lashed out against gay marriage, criticized the pope, and told his audience that those who do not follow Jesus Christ “engage in some sort of a false
Speaking at Restoration Fellowship Church in Strasburg in Shenandoah County, days after accusing his Democratic rival of running a socially divisive campaign, Jackson said there is no other means of salvation than through Jesus Christ.
“If you don’t know
him, if you don’t follow him, if you don’t come to him, you engage in some sort of false religion,” Jackson said. “That’s controversial, but it’s the truth. There is only one God, there is the God named Jesus Christ.”
The Chesapeake pastor and lawyer, who has called gays “sick” and “perverted,” also underscored his stance against same-sex marriage.
“The family was ordained by God. He ordained it one man and one woman in the bonds of holy matrimony,” Jackson said. “(In the Bible) I don’t hear anything about two people of the same sex being married.”
Jackson said he disagreed with Pope Francis, who sent shockwaves through
the Roman Catholic Church last week when he said that the church had grown “obsessed” with gay marriage, abortion and contraception, and that he had chosen not to talk about those issues.
The pope said in an interview with Rome’s leading Jesuit publication: “When God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person? We must always consider the person.”
More type makes right? The amount of ink expended recently in the Sun-News opinion section on gay marriage may cause many to believe it’s the normal outcome of a legitimate sexual lifestyle.
Two examples: Peter Goodman’s op-ed piece “County took right stand in support of same-sex marriage” (Page C5, Sept. 1, with a promo blurb on C1) and Fr. Jim Lehman’s letter to the editor, “Marriage licenses won’t make more gay” (Page A4, Sept. 4).
There is another point of view. It may not be politically correct; but political correctness doesn’t always equal truth.
Mr. Goodman injected the Bible into the mix with the statement, “I can’t recall Jesus discussing the subject.” There was no need for Jesus to address gay marriage. That it would even be considered was foreign to the biblical writers. The Bible takes for granted marriage is between a man and a woman. Jesus made this plain in responding to a question about divorce: “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female and for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?” (Matthew 19:4-5).
When God created people, he made them male and female (Genesis 1:27), with different but complementary sexual organs. That two people with identical sexual organs should marry is not considered the
The argument for gay marriage is also framed as a civil rights issue, and its denial compared to denial of equal rights for blacks. This is an insult to every black martyr who was killed or persecuted for the color of his/her skin. People cannot change their color; sexual preference is another matter (see below).
Bias because of one’s color is evil. In the 1960s, as a representative of our town’s Human Rights Commission, I personally went to restaurant owners asking them to integrate.
Another argument for gay marriage (and homosexuality) is that those who engage in this activity have no choice: They are born this way. But there are many examples of people moving in and out of gay relationships, some in the news and some not.
Take, for instance, Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, who was elected the first gay bishop of the Episcopal Church. He was married and fathered two children before becoming divorced and entering into a gay relationship. On the other side, I witnessed a young man giving a presentation on how he was into the gay lifestyle for several years but left it.
Are people tempted to enter this kind of sexual practice? Certainly. Even Jesus “was tempted in all things as we are” (Hebrews 4:15). But it is not fair to single out just gays. The Bible denounces any sexual activity outside of marriage, whether it be homosexuality (Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9), adultery (Matthew 5:21-22) or fornication in general (Ephesians 5:5).

Had a chat with Ryan OReilly today. Some of my talk will be reconstituted as part of a Hockey News story on him. First off, if youre not subscribing to The Hockey News, shame on you. It remains the Bible of hockey, a must-read if you are to be taken seriously as a hockey fan. Subscription info here, and there are some good deals on it right now.
OReilly is training hard, as always, in Ontario. His dad, Brian, is his personal trainer. Brian has a successful life-coaching business.
A few quotes from the chat with The Factor:
What was your reaction to Patrick Roy saying youll move from center to left wing: Im excited about it. Im looking at it as a good new challenge for me. I mean, Ill be playing with two great players (Matt Duchene at center and P.A. Parenteau at right wing). Ive played on the wing before, with Canada in the World Championships (skating with Jeff Skinner and Jordan Staal) so Im not totally unfamiliar with it.
Did it bother you at first, hearing about the switch? No, not at all. I figured when they drafted (Nathan) MacKinnon, something would have to be done.
What are your initial worries about playing a new position? I guess just staying on my side and not trying to do too much, not going over to P.A.s side. Ill need to just get used to it, but I think Ill make the adjustment.
What is your feeling of Roy being the new coach? I mean, its great. Hes all about winning. Ive talked with him and I came away feeling really good. He brings so much passion to the game. It cant help but rub off on you.
You went through a contract impasse with the team last year and missed a bunch of the season. How different is your mindset now as opposed to last year at this time? Well, its much more comfortable. This time, I know Ill be at training camp, training at altitude early, with my teammates. I know I can just concentrate on hockey and nothing else. What happened happened, but Im just glad its behind me. I just want to win with the Avalanche. Last year, on top of things, there was the lockout and that made everything tougher for everybody. Its nice not to have to worry about that too.

The Queen would be breaking her oath of coronation if she signed gay marriage in to law, according to a former leading Bishop.
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali said the Queen had a duty to “uphold the laws of God” and that this was at odds with allowing gay couples to wed.
The former Bishop of Rochester made the comments during a service outside Buckingham Palace on Sunday, ahead of a key vote on gay marriage in the House of Lords this week.
He later told the Daily Mail: “The idea of a constitutional monarchy comes from the Bible. Christians are told in the Bible to obey their rulers, unless the ruler tells us to do something God forbids. Happily in this country we have a monarchy that has taken an oath of upholding Gods laws, and the present Queen has for years been faithful to that. We are praying that she continues to be faithful.
“That puts the onus on the prime minister not to put the Queen into a position where she may have to go against the sovereign promises she has made. We hope that she is not put in that position.”
Nazir-Ali caused controversy in 2009 when he said while gay people were welcome to attend church they should “repent and be changed.”
During her oath in 1953 the Queen pledged to “maintain the Laws of God”. On Tuesday, she will attend a service at Westminster Abbey to mark 60 years since the coronation. On the same day peers will vote on whether to allow David Cameron’s gay marriage Bill to continue its passage through parliament.
According to the Daily Telegraph, senior Church of England officials have advised Bishops in the Lords to stay away from the vote. It has been reported the Church fears the sight of unelected religious leaders voting against a same-sex marriage Bill that was overwhelmingly passed by the Commons could re-open the debate over whether it is right Bishops get to sit in parliament.
Peers from all parties are set to unite in a bid to derail the gay marriage, with Cameron under pressure from Tory activists to abandon the reform.
But he was bolstered by the support of several senior Conservative figures who called on colleagues not to “hinder a measure whose time has come”. Six former ministers – including five veterans of Margaret Thatcher’s cabinets – argued in a letter to The Times that the allowing same-sex marriage would strengthen the institution.

A group that opposes legalizing gay marriage in Minnesota now says it “regrets” statements posted on an affiliate’s website that compared the tactics of gay rights activists to Nazi propaganda.
“Minnesota for Marriage regrets that statements considered by many to be offensive appeared on the website of a separate organization, Minnesota Pastors for Marriage. Although Minnesota for Marriage is not responsible for the content of that website, nor the content on the websites of other supportive coalition members, we nevertheless regret any hurt those statements have caused,” the Friday, March 29, statement said.
Minnesota for Marriage was criticized Thursday by same-sex marriage supporters for materials posted on one of the group’s partner sites. Pastors for Marriage had information to assist pastors in their sermons or to insert in their congregations’ bulletins for the group’s “Stand for Marriage Sunday” on April 7. It refers to “old ‘gay gene’ studies” cited by homosexuals who say, “We were born this way; it is in our genes; God made us gay.”
“They essentially practice Joseph Goebel’s Nazi philosophy of propaganda, which is basically this: Tell a lie long enough and loud enough and eventually most mindless Americans will believe it,” the document states, misspelling the Nazi figure’s last name.
Minnesota for Marriage originally called the criticism a “smoke screen” by the other side.
Minnesotans United for All Families held a Friday news conference with
Rabbi Michael Latz called the comments “shocking, disturbing and Un-Minnesotan.” Latz said he was particularly offended as someone whose in-laws escaped the Holocaust that Minnesota for Marriage would use religious texts like the Bible and Torah to fight same-sex marriage.
“When did you decide to use the sacred text as a weapon of mass destruction?” Latz asked.

Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman is now supporting gay marriage and says his reversal on the issue began when he learned one of his sons is gay.
Ohio’s junior senator disclosed his change of heart in interviews with several Ohio newspapers and CNN. In an op-ed published Friday in The Columbus Dispatch, he said the decision came after a lot of thought.
“I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn’t deny them the opportunity to get married,” he wrote.
As a member of the House in 1996, Portman voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman and bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage.
Portman’s reversal makes him the only Senate Republican to back gay marriage.
Portman said his views on gay marriage began changing in 2011, when his son, Will, then a freshman at Yale University, told his parents he was gay and that it wasn’t a choice but “part of who he was.” Portman said he and his wife, Jane, were very surprised but also supportive.
He said it prompted him to reconsider gay marriage from a different perspective, that of a father who wants all three of his children to have happy lives with people they love.
He said he talked to his pastor and to people on both sides of the gay marriage issue, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who is opposed to gay marriage, and former Vice President Dick Cheney, who supports it. Cheney’s daughter is a lesbian.
Portman told reporters Thursday that his previous views on marriage were rooted in his Methodist faith.
“Ultimately, for me, it came down to the Bible’s overarching themes of love and compassion and my belief that we are all children of God,” he wrote.
