Gay marriage opposition group ‘regrets’ Nazi comparison

A group that opposes legalizing gay marriage in Minnesota now says it “regrets” statements posted on an affiliate’s website that compared the tactics of gay rights activists to Nazi propaganda.

“Minnesota for Marriage regrets that statements considered by many to be offensive appeared on the website of a separate organization, Minnesota Pastors for Marriage. Although Minnesota for Marriage is not responsible for the content of that website, nor the content on the websites of other supportive coalition members, we nevertheless regret any hurt those statements have caused,” the Friday, March 29, statement said.

Minnesota for Marriage was criticized Thursday by same-sex marriage supporters for materials posted on one of the group’s partner sites. Pastors for Marriage had information to assist pastors in their sermons or to insert in their congregations’ bulletins for the group’s “Stand for Marriage Sunday” on April 7. It refers to “old ‘gay gene’ studies” cited by homosexuals who say, “We were born this way; it is in our genes; God made us gay.”

“They essentially practice Joseph Goebel’s Nazi philosophy of propaganda, which is basically this: Tell a lie long enough and loud enough and eventually most mindless Americans will believe it,” the document states, misspelling the Nazi figure’s last name.

Minnesota for Marriage originally called the criticism a “smoke screen” by the other side.

Minnesotans United for All Families held a Friday news conference with

Rabbi Michael Latz called the comments “shocking, disturbing and Un-Minnesotan.” Latz said he was particularly offended as someone whose in-laws escaped the Holocaust that Minnesota for Marriage would use religious texts like the Bible and Torah to fight same-sex marriage.

“When did you decide to use the sacred text as a weapon of mass destruction?” Latz asked.

GOP’s Portman Supports Gay Marriage

Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman is now supporting gay marriage and says his reversal on the issue began when he learned one of his sons is gay.

Ohio’s junior senator disclosed his change of heart in interviews with several Ohio newspapers and CNN. In an op-ed published Friday in The Columbus Dispatch, he said the decision came after a lot of thought.

“I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn’t deny them the opportunity to get married,” he wrote.

As a member of the House in 1996, Portman voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman and bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

Portman’s reversal makes him the only Senate Republican to back gay marriage.

Portman said his views on gay marriage began changing in 2011, when his son, Will, then a freshman at Yale University, told his parents he was gay and that it wasn’t a choice but “part of who he was.” Portman said he and his wife, Jane, were very surprised but also supportive.

He said it prompted him to reconsider gay marriage from a different perspective, that of a father who wants all three of his children to have happy lives with people they love.

He said he talked to his pastor and to people on both sides of the gay marriage issue, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who is opposed to gay marriage, and former Vice President Dick Cheney, who supports it. Cheney’s daughter is a lesbian.

Portman told reporters Thursday that his previous views on marriage were rooted in his Methodist faith.

“Ultimately, for me, it came down to the Bible’s overarching themes of love and compassion and my belief that we are all children of God,” he wrote.

GOP Chairman, Lawmaker Take Heat on Gay Marriage

Two Illinois Republicans are finding out that for all the talk nationally of the GOP becoming more inclusive and appealing to voters by softening stances on social issues, it’s difficult to actually follow through.

The state Republican Party’s central committee will meet Saturday to consider firing chairman Pat Brady, largely because he spoke out in favor of a bill to end Illinois’ ban on gay marriage. And the only Republican state senator to vote in favor of same-sex marriage, Sen. Jason Barickman, has been chastised by his colleagues and a national organization opposing the measure.

Brady and Barickman say they’ve heard from hundreds of people since taking their positions earlier this year some were thankful, others excoriated them. A conservative organization even posted Brady’s cellphone number online and his voicemail quickly filled up while on vacation with words he said he “didn’t know were in the Bible.”

“This issue is not about me. It’s about the direction of the party going forward,” Brady said. “It just plays into a national narrative of the GOP as closed-minded.”

After a poor showing at the polls in November, national Republican party leaders vowed to work harder to attract more young, moderate and minority voters those who may be on board with the party fiscally speaking, but are turned off by the conservative views on social issues, such as immigration and gay rights.

Last month, more than 75 prominent Republicans, including four governors and advisers to former President George W. Bush, signed a legal brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down California’s ban on same-sex marriage. Former First Lady Laura Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney also support gay marriage.

But politicians who step out on the ledge in order to instigate change risk getting pushed off, as their actions raise the ire of social conservatives, the Republicans most likely to vote in primaries and have leadership posts.

Rep. Tom Cross, the top Republican in the Illinois House, called Brady’s possible firing “a big mistake.”

“We’re a party that prides itself and often talks about having a big tent approach. And if we’re going to be a party that grows … we need to acknowledge that … we’re not always going to agree with each other 100 percent,” Cross said. “To me, you can be for (gay marriage), or you can be against it. But we ought to say to ‘You have a place in this party.’”

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, the state’s ranking Republican lawmaker, also believes it would be “a mistake” to remove Brady, spokesman Lance Trover said Friday. Kirk voted to end the policy on gays serving in the military, known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and opposes a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

Illinois Senate approves gay marriage

The Democratic-led Senate delivered a Valentine’s Day victory to gay and lesbian couples today, passing legislation for the first time that would allow same-sex marriage in Illinois.

SPRINGFIELD The Democratic-led Senate delivered a Valentines Day victory to gay and lesbian couples today, passing legislation for the first time that would allow same-sex marriage in Illinois.

The gay marriage measure now goes to the House, where the fight is expected to be tougher. Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign the bill if it reaches his desk.

The 34-21-2 Senate vote represents a turnaround of sorts after advocates unsuccessfully sought to push a gay marriage bill through last months lame-duck legislative session. Supporters vowed to try again quickly with a new General Assembly that featured even more Democratic seats in both chambers.

Under the measure, marriage officially would be changed in state law from an act between a man and a woman to two people. The legislation explicitly says nothing in the proposed law would force a religious denomination or minster to solemnize any marriage. People in civil unions would be able to convert them to gay marriages within a year of a same-sex marriage law going on the books in Illinois.

While advocates have brought forth a lengthy line-up of religious leaders who have endorsed same-sex marriage, Catholics and other church groups have provided fierce opposition. They have argued same-sex marriage goes against the basic tenets of the Bible, which call for marriage to be only between a man and woman. Two years ago, Illinois legalized civil unions for straight and gay couples.

Sen. Heather Steans, who sponsored the measure, argued the legislation is needed because it is time for Illinois to eliminate the “second-class status” of gay and lesbian couples.

The Chicago Democrat pleaded with colleages for support for the legislation because same-sex couples want to marry for the same reasons as heterosexual couples, including love.

The law will not require ministers to perform a marriage of gay couples. Nor will church officials have to require facilities of churches, such as parish or fellowship halls, to be used by gay couples against the wishes of a religious group, Steans said.
